The Institute of Physiology and Pathophysiology was founded in 1998 as a part of the Faculty of Health Studies of the University of Ostrava.

The Institute currently possess state-of-the-art equipment for spirometric and spiroergometric examination of cardiopulmonary functions, for measurement of energy output in laboratory and field conditions, investigation of movement activity by means of the integrated electromyography method, as well as basic equipment for anthropometric measurements. The Institute also possesses modern equipment for measurement of thermal and humidity conditions and physiological reactions of living organisms to working thermal load. The Institute makes use of the climatic chamber at the Institute of Public Health in Ostrava for research purposes, linked to the National Reference Laboratories for measurement and evaluation of microclimatic conditions of the Institute of Public Health in Ostrava.
